A Map of the World: The World According to Illustrators and Storytellers is a book of creative insights about our diverse planet edited by Antonis Antoniou, R. Klanten, H. Ehmann and H. Hellige.

About the book:

A Map of the World is a compelling collection of work by a new generation of original and sought-after designers, illustrators, and mapmakers. This work showcases specific regions, characterizes local scenes, generates moods, and tells stories beyond sheer navigation. From accurate and surprisingly detailed representations to personal, naïve, and modernistic interpretations, the featured projects from around the world range from maps and atlases inspired by classic forms to cartographic experiments and editorial illustrations.

Caleb Brown (b.1981, USA) - Shark Drop. Oil on Canvas (2009-2010)

New York based artist Caleb Brown was born in Washington State where he was raised and started drawing and painting at a very young age. His paintings are cultural allegories that aim to reflect his view of the modern world. He combines themes and elements of contemporary life (such as media culture, genetic engineering, globalization, etc.) and expands into completely ridiculous scenes that depict a fictitious near-future or alternate reality. Brown’s hope is that by employing this editorial and often satirical method of expression, rather than using a more journalistic approach, he might communicate his observations and feelings about our modern existence more aptly than by painting actual images of contemporary life. Great thanks to the artist for sending this over.

The Making Of: @strght Skateboards

For more photos from Strght Skateboards, be sure to follow @strght and check out their Photos of You section on your mobile device.

Gabe Willis is a surfer—or at least he was until he moved from sunny San Diego to landlocked Oklahoma for college. Facing a sudden lack of waves, Gabe bought a skateboard and took to the streets, only to be left with a broken board after a few weeks. Rather than dip into his student budget for a new one, Gabe decided to try his hand at making one himself. Drawing inspiration from old-fashioned wooden boards and his family’s engraving company, he set to work and documented his process on Instagram as he went.

As people saw the unique board he was creating, they wanted to figure out how to get one as well. Supported by the interest on Instagram, Gabe created the @strght account and began filling orders directly through Instagram. Now, seven months later, Strght has expanded to four full-time employees and has begun to sell in stores and through web retailers.

With the addition of Photos of You, Strght put out a call to action asking their followers to add the @strght Instagram account to their photos of the boards. As a result, they and their followers are now able to see photos from happy customers across Instagram brought into one neat place.

Toby Ng - The World of 100

Have you ever asked yourself, what would the World look like as a small community of 100 people? Probably not. However, it is something to think about, as the reality would be startling - as much as you’d think so, the village would only have 7 computers, and only 1 person in the World Village would be educated at University level.

These facts are something that designer Toby Ng has thought about very carefully, and turned the results of his findings into a series of twenty infographics depicting ‘The World of 100’. Although aesthetically beautiful, with sharp lines and bold, vibrant colours, these infographics are often horrifying.

The posters look as though they have come straight out of a children’s book; is this to mirror the naivety of those that are most likely to be looking at them on their computers?

“Look, this is the World we are living in.”

- Toby Ng

The Tiny Paper Dolls of @rubicantekid

When your everyday surroundings begin to feel a little mundane, try this: Imagine what it would be like were you to shrink to the size of your thumb, suddenly dwarfed by items you might normally hold in your hand.

If you have a fanciful imagination, you might dream up something very similar to @rubicantekid’s Instagram feed. For the past year, illustrator Mike Rubenstein has been snapping photos of his tiny paper people amid a variety of humorous backdrops. “The whole fun of the project is in shifting the context of everyday things through these little cutouts,” says Mike.

“The first of these little people was really just a doodle from a Post-It note, but I got such a kick out of how the photo came out that I started looking around my desk to see what sort of stuff I had lying around… and at this point I can’t look at anything without wondering if a little paper guy might look good alongside it.”

Follow the adventures of Mike’s tiny paper people at instagram.com/rubicantekid, and view more of his work at ShrugLyfe and Astrostrange.
